Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: Al-Walid bin al-Mughirah prepared a meal for Quraysh. When they had eaten, al-Walid said: What do you say about this man? Someone said: He is a sorcerer. Someone said: He is not a sorcerer. Someone said: He is a soothsayer. Someone said: He is not a soothsayer. Someone said: He is a poet. Someone said: He is not a poet. Someone said: This is magic handed down. Then they all agreed that it is magic handed down. When news of this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he became grieved, covered his head and wrapped himself in a cloak. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "O you enveloped in a cloak! Arise and warn (the people), and proclaim the greatness of your Lord, and keep your garments pure, and keep away from idols, and do not confer a favour (with the aim of) seeking more, and be patient for the sake of your Lord."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Khuzi, who is matruk (abandoned).

Al-Qasim bin Abi Bazzah relates concerning this statement of Allah Almighty (Allah Almighty says): "And do not confer a favour (with the aim of) seeking more." Al-Qasim says: This means (do not do so) that you give something and then seek more than it (in return).
Abdullah bin Ahmad recorded it.
