Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates (Allah Almighty says): "O Prophet! Why do you prohibit what Allah Almighty has made lawful for you?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: This verse was revealed concerning the bondwoman of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (Sayyidah Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah, may Allah be pleased with her).
Al-Bazzar recorded it with two chains, and al-Tabarani also recorded it. The narrators of al-Bazzar are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Bishr bin Adam al-Asghar, who is thiqah (trustworthy).

Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه البزار فى المسند (2275 و 2274)»
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his bondwoman Sayyidah Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) into the house of Sayyidah Hafsah bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) found her with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Out of all the houses of your wives, (did you have to bring her) into my house? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She is unlawful for me; I will not go near her now. O Hafsah! Keep this matter hidden." Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) went out and came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: O daughter of Abu Bakr! Shall I not give you good news? Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: What is it? She said: I found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with Mariyah in my house, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! Out of all the houses of your other wives, (did you have to bring her) into my house? The first piece of good news is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has made that woman unlawful for himself. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Hafsah! Shall I not give you good news?" I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed me that your father (that is, Sayyidah Aishah's) will become the ruler after him, and my father (that is, Sayyidah Hafsah's father) will become the ruler after your father (that is, Sayyidah Aishah's father). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had asked me to keep this hidden. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "O Prophet! Why do you prohibit what Allah Almighty has made lawful for you?" This refers to Sayyidah Mariyah al-Qibtiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). "You seek the pleasure of your wives, and Allah Almighty is Forgiving, Merciful", that is, regarding what happened on your part. "Allah Almighty has ordained for you the dissolution of your oaths (by expiation), and Allah Almighty is your Protector, and He is the Knowing, the Wise. And when the Prophet confided a matter to one of his wives", meaning that he said this to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her). "And when she disclosed it", that is, she told the matter to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). "And Allah Almighty informed His Prophet about it", that is, informed him through the Qur'an. "He made known part of it", that is, he made known to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) what she had disclosed concerning Sayyidah Mariyah (may Allah be pleased with her). "And he turned away from part of it", that is, from what Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) had told about the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); the Prophet did not reveal this to her. "Then when he informed her of it, she asked: Who told you this? He said: The All-Knowing, the All-Aware informed me." Then Allah Almighty addressed that woman, reproaching her, and said: "If you two turn in repentance to Allah (that would be fitting), for your hearts have inclined; and if you support each other against him, then indeed Allah Almighty is his Protector, and Jibril, and the righteous among the believers", which refers to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). "And the angels, after that, are also supporters. It may be that if he divorces you, Allah Almighty will give him in exchange wives better than you: Muslim, believing, obedient, repentant, worshipping, fasting, previously married and virgins." (The narrator relates:) So the promise Allah Almighty made to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (includes, among the previously married women, Asiyah bint Muzahim, the wife of Pharaoh, and the sister of Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him); and among the virgins, Sayyidah Maryam bint Imran and the sister of Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), who will become wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Hereafter).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat by way of Musa bin Ja'far bin Abi Kathir from his paternal uncle. Al-Dhahabi says: He is majhul (unknown), and his report is saqit (discarded).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to drink honey at the house of Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her). Once he came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and she said: I notice a smell from you. Then he went to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she too said: I notice a smell from you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I think it is from a drink I had at Sawdah's house. By Allah! I will not drink it anymore. So this verse was revealed concerning it: "O Prophet! Why do you prohibit what Allah Almighty has made lawful for you?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
