Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: This verse was revealed about me: "O you who believe! When you consult the Messenger privately, present an offering of charity before your private consultation." So I presented a grain of barley. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are indeed one who gives very little." Then the other verse was revealed: "Are you afraid to present offerings of charity before your private consultation?" This is the complete verse.
Al-Tabarani recorded it within a long hadith; and in the hadith of the Sahih it is mentioned: "Three verses were revealed about me." Its chain contains a narrator, Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the shade of his chamber, and its shade was receding from him. He said to his Companions: "A man will come to you who will look at you with the eyes of a devil; when you see him, do not speak with him." The narrator says: Then a man with blue eyes came. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he called him and said: "Why do you and your companions revile me?" He said: Stay where you are, and I will bring them to you. So the man went and brought them, and they swore by Allah that they had not said any such thing nor done any such thing. Concerning them Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all, they will swear to Him just as they swear to you." This is to the end of the verse.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, except that he narrated these words: "They began swearing by Allah that they had not said anything and had not done anything, until he overlooked them." The rest of the narration is as before.

In one narration the words are: "A man will come before you who will look with the eyes of a devil." The narrator says: Then a man with blue eyes came and said: O Muhammad! On what basis do you revile me and criticise me? Or he said words to that effect. The narrator says: Then he began to swear. The narrator says: Then this verse of Surah al-Mujadilah was revealed: "And they swear to a lie while they know." And the other verse was also revealed.
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it, and the narrators of all these narrations are the narrators of the Sahih.
