Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the shade of his chamber, and its shade was receding from him. He said to his Companions: "A man will come to you who will look at you with the eyes of a devil; when you see him, do not speak with him." The narrator says: Then a man with blue eyes came. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he called him and said: "Why do you and your companions revile me?" He said: Stay where you are, and I will bring them to you. So the man went and brought them, and they swore by Allah that they had not said any such thing nor done any such thing. Concerning them Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all, they will swear to Him just as they swear to you." This is to the end of the verse.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, except that he narrated these words: "They began swearing by Allah that they had not said anything and had not done anything, until he overlooked them." The rest of the narration is as before.
