Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: This verse was revealed: "Indeed, you and what you worship besides Allah are the fuel of Hell; you will arrive at it." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Then the following verse abrogated it: (Allah Almighty says:) "Indeed, those for whom the best (reward) has already gone forth from Us, they will be kept far from it." This refers to Sayyiduna Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon him) and his companions.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Shurahbil bin Sa'd, the freed slave of the Ansar, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) while the majority declared him da'if (weak); the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: When this verse was revealed: "Indeed, you and what you worship besides Allah are the fuel of Hell, and you will arrive at it," Abdullah bin al-Ziba'ra said: "I will argue with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) on your behalf about this." Then he said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Has this verse not been revealed to you: 'Indeed, you and what you worship besides Allah are the fuel of Hell, and you will arrive at it'?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: "These Christians worship Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him), the Jews worship Sayyiduna Uzayr (peace be upon him), and Banu Tamim worship the angels. So will these (that is, the ones these people worship) also go to Hell?" Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Indeed, those for whom the best (reward) has gone forth from Us, they will be kept far from it."
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Asim bin Bahdalah, who has been declared trustworthy, while a group declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When those who will abide in Hell forever are all that remain in it, they will be placed in coffins of fire containing nails of fire. He said this two or three times, and then said: They will not see anyone in Hell being punished except themselves. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "For them therein (in Hell) is groaning, and therein (in Hell) they will not hear anything else."
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Yahya al-Himmani, who is da'if (weak).
