Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) states: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by al-Hijr, he said: Do not ask for signs, for the people of Sayyiduna Salih (peace be upon him) asked for signs; that she-camel used to come here by this path. They disobeyed the command of their Lord and hamstrung that she-camel; for she would drink their water on one particular day, and they would drink her milk on one particular day, so they hamstrung her. Then a mighty blast seized them, and Allah Almighty destroyed all of them who were beneath the sky, except one man who was in the Sanctuary of Allah. It was asked: O Messenger of Allah, who was he? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He was Abu Righal, and when he left the bounds of the Sanctuary, the same thing befell him that had befallen his people.
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it; al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat as a more complete narration than this, which has already passed in the chapter on Surah Hud. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: The people of Makkah requested the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to turn Mount Safa into gold for them and to remove the mountains from around them so that they could cultivate the land. It was said to him: If you wish, We will grant them respite; and if you wish, We will give them what they have requested, but if they then disbelieve, they will be destroyed just as those before them were destroyed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! Rather, I grant them respite. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And nothing prevented Us from sending the signs except that the former peoples denied them; and We gave Thamud the she-camel as a clear sign."

In one narration the words are: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated, and Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him and said: Your Lord conveys His greetings of peace to you, and He says to you: If you wish, Mount Safa will become gold for these people by morning; but whoever of them disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment such as I will not have inflicted on anyone in all the worlds. And if you wish, I will open for them the doors of repentance and mercy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Rather the doors of repentance and mercy (I choose). The narrators of both narrations are the narrators of the Sahih, except that in one of its routes a narrator appears as Imran bin al-Hakam, which is an error; some have given his name as Imran Abu al-Hakam, who is the son of al-Harith, and this is correct, and he is one of the narrators of the Sahih.
Al-Bazzar recorded something similar.
