In one narration the words are: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated, and Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him and said: Your Lord conveys His greetings of peace to you, and He says to you: If you wish, Mount Safa will become gold for these people by morning; but whoever of them disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment such as I will not have inflicted on anyone in all the worlds. And if you wish, I will open for them the doors of repentance and mercy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Rather the doors of repentance and mercy (I choose). The narrators of both narrations are the narrators of the Sahih, except that in one of its routes a narrator appears as Imran bin al-Hakam, which is an error; some have given his name as Imran Abu al-Hakam, who is the son of al-Harith, and this is correct, and he is one of the narrators of the Sahih.
Al-Bazzar recorded something similar.
