Shahr states: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) told me this: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated in the courtyard of his house. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by him, and he smiled, looking towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Will you not sit? He said: Yes indeed. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze towards the sky. He kept looking towards the sky for a while, then he lowered his gaze until he rested it on the ground to his right. Then he began moving his head, as though something was being said to him and he was understanding it. Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) was watching all of this. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed what he was doing and had understood what had been said to him, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze towards the sky, just as he had raised it the first time. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept following it (the angel) with his gaze until it disappeared into the sky. Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) was still sitting where he had first sat. He said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! In all the time I have sat with you and come to you, I have never seen you do what you have just done. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What did I do? He said: I saw that first you raised your gaze towards the sky, then you lowered it until you turned it to your right side. Then you kept attending to that side and left me, and then you began moving your head as though you were trying to understand something being said to you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Did you notice this? Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The angel of my Lord came to me just now while you were sitting. He asked: The messenger of Allah Almighty? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What did he say to you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (He recited this verse:) "Indeed, Allah Almighty commands justice, excellence and giving to near relatives, and He forbids indecency, wrongdoing and transgression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed." Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) states: At that time faith became firmly settled in my heart, and I came to love Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it. Shahr, the narrator, was declared thiqah (trustworthy) by Ahmad and a group (of scholars); there is a weakness in him that is not harmful. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) states: Once I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze and looked upwards; then he lowered his head, so much so that it almost touched the ground; then he raised his gaze upwards. Then he said: "Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me and told me to place this verse at this place in this surah" (Allah Almighty says:) "Indeed, Allah Almighty commands justice, excellence and giving to near relatives, and He forbids indecency, wrongdoing and transgression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed."
Ahmad recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).

Abu al-Duha states: Once Masruq and Shutayr bin Shakal met together in the mosque. Masruq said: Did you hear Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) state that the most comprehensive verse in the Qur'an concerning the lawful and the unlawful, commands and prohibitions, is this: "Indeed, Allah Almighty commands justice, excellence and giving to near relatives, and He forbids indecency, wrongdoing and transgression," to the end of the verse? The other replied: Yes. Masruq said: I too heard him state this.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as part of a long hadith that will be mentioned in the chapter on Surat al-Talaq. Its chain contains a narrator, Asim bin Bahdalah, who is thiqah (trustworthy), though there is weakness in him; the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
