Masruq states: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed Mu'adh was an ummah, devoutly obedient to Allah Almighty, inclining away from falsehood, and he was not of the polytheists." Farwah, a man from the tribe of Ashja', said: He has forgotten; the actual words in the verse are: "Indeed Ibrahim." He said: Who has forgotten? We used to liken Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about (the word) ummah, and he said: It means one who teaches goodness. He was asked about the word qanit, and he said: It means one who obeys Allah and His Messenger.
Al-Tabarani recorded it with various chains, and the narrators of some of them are the narrators of the Sahih.
