Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said that a woman had come to him to trade, he took her into a small room and did something evil with her short of intercourse. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Woe to you! Perhaps she is a woman whose husband has gone away in the path of Allah." He said: "Yes." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Go to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and ask him about it." The man came to him and asked him, and he said: "Perhaps she is a woman whose husband has gone away in the path of Allah." Then he too said the like of what Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. Then the man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and related this to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perhaps she is a woman whose husband has gone away in the path of Allah." Then, meanwhile, this command of the Qur'an was revealed: "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in a part of the night," to the end of the verse. The man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Is this specific to me, or general for all people?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) struck the man's chest with his hand and said: "No, and may your eyes find no comfort! Rather, it is general for all people." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umar has spoken the truth."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, in which he recorded these words: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hand, struck the man's chest and said: "No, by Allah! There is no special honour; rather, this command is general for all people." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and said: "Umar has spoken the truth."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat in a much abridged form. The chain of Imam Ahmad and of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir contains a narrator, Ali bin Zayd, who has a poor memory and is thiqah (trustworthy); the remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy), and the chain of al-Mu'jam al-Awsat is da'if (weak).

In one narration of Imam Ahmad the wording is: A woman came to him to buy something. He said: "Go into the storeroom so that I may give it to you." The woman went in, and the man kissed her and pressed her to himself. The woman said: "My husband is away." So the man let her go.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: One of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a wife. He asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to go out on some errand, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission. He went out on a rainy day, and there was a woman bathing by a well. When he came as close to the woman as a man is to a woman during intercourse and began to move his private part, it did not become erect. He got up, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Pray four rak'ahs." And Allah Almighty revealed this verse about it: "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in a part of the night. Indeed, good deeds wipe away evil deeds."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I have not seen anything that pursues better or overtakes more quickly than a fresh affliction for an old sin. (Allah Almighty says:) 'Indeed, good deeds wipe away evil deeds. That is a reminder for those who take heed.'"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Malik bin Yahya bin Amr al-Nukri, and he is da'if (weak), and the same is the case with his father.
