Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the settlement called al-Hijr during the expedition of Tabuk, he stood up there and, addressing the people, said: "O people! Do not ask your Prophet for signs (that is, miracles). These are the people of Sayyiduna Salih (peace be upon him); they demanded of their Prophet that he send them a she-camel, and he did so. She used to come by this path and drink their water on her appointed day, and they would milk from her as much as would serve them on the intervening day. Then she would go back by this path. Then they hamstrung her, and Allah Almighty gave them a respite of three days, and the promise of Allah Almighty is never false. Then a mighty blast seized them, and Allah Almighty destroyed all of them who were between the heaven and the earth, except one man who was within the boundaries of the Haram of Allah, and the Haram of Allah saved him from the punishment of Allah." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! Who is that man?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abu Righal."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and Imam Ahmad recorded something similar. The narrators of Imam Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih. Other routes of this narration, in abridged form, have already passed in the chapter on the expedition of Tabuk.
