Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he sat down, we too sat around him. Then he intended to get up, and he left his sandals there, or left some extra garment that was on his body there. He got up and left his sandals there. Then I took a vessel of water and caught up with him, but he came back just like that, without having relieved himself. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Did you not need to relieve yourself?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, but an angel from my Lord came to me and recited this verse: 'And whoever does an evil deed or wrongs himself and then seeks forgiveness from Allah Almighty will find Allah Almighty Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.'" (The narrator said:) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The verse before it had weighed heavily upon me. Allah Almighty says: 'Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it.'" (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "So I intended to give glad tidings to my companions." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Even if that person has committed fornication, even if he has stolen, and then he seeks forgiveness, will he be forgiven?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." I repeated this three times, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if Abu al-Darda's nose be rubbed in the dust (it will still be so)." The narrator said: I saw Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) touching his finger to his nose.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Mubashshir bin Isma'il, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When a man from the Children of Israel committed a sin, it would be written on his door: "You have committed such-and-such a sin, and its expiation is to do such-and-such a deed." Its purpose was that the person would regard his sin as grave and do that deed. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I would not like Allah Almighty to have given us that situation in place of this verse, and the verse is this: Allah Almighty says: 'And whoever does an evil deed or wrongs himself, then seeks forgiveness from Allah Almighty, will find Allah Almighty Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih; however, I do not think that Ibn Sirin heard from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the Book of Allah there are two verses such that, when any servant commits a sin, then recites them both and asks Allah Almighty for forgiveness, Allah Almighty will forgive him. (The first verse is this; Allah Almighty says:) "Those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah Almighty and ask forgiveness for their sins, and who forgives sins except Allah?" (The second verse is this; Allah Almighty says:) "And whoever does evil or wrongs himself and then seeks forgiveness from Allah Almighty will find Allah Almighty Forgiving and Merciful."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Ibrahim al-Nakha'i narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, in the Qur'an there are two verses such that, when any servant commits a sin, then recites those two verses and then asks Allah Almighty for forgiveness, he will be forgiven. The people asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) about those two verses, but Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not tell them about them. Alqamah and al-Aswad, one of them said to the other: "Get up and come with us." So the two of them got up and went to their house. They opened the Qur'an and began turning its pages. They looked through Surah al-Baqarah, then the two of them said: "We have not found those verses in it." Then they looked through Surah al-Nisa until they reached this verse: "And whoever does evil or wrongs himself and then seeks forgiveness from Allah Almighty will find Allah Almighty Forgiving and Merciful." They said: "This is one verse." Then they began turning the pages of Surah Al Imran until they reached this saying of Allah Almighty: "When they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, they remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins, and none forgives sins except Allah Almighty, and they do not persist in what they have done while they know." The two of them said: "This is the other verse." Then the two of them closed the Qur'an, came to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Are these the two verses?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is jayyid (good), except that the narrator Ibrahim did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In Surah al-Nisa there are five verses which I would not be pleased to exchange for the world and all it contains, and I know that the scholars (or the people of knowledge), when they recite these verses, recognise them. (Allah Almighty says:) "If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove your evil deeds from you and admit you to a noble entrance." Allah Almighty says: "Indeed, Allah Almighty does not do injustice even the weight of an atom; and if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward." Allah Almighty says: "Indeed, Allah Almighty does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, and He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills." Allah Almighty says: "And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you and asked forgiveness of Allah Almighty, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Almighty Accepting of repentance and Merciful." Allah Almighty says: "And whoever does an evil deed or wrongs himself and then seeks forgiveness from Allah Almighty will find Allah Almighty Forgiving and Merciful."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
