Ibrahim al-Nakha'i narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed, in the Qur'an there are two verses such that, when any servant commits a sin, then recites those two verses and then asks Allah Almighty for forgiveness, he will be forgiven. The people asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) about those two verses, but Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not tell them about them. Alqamah and al-Aswad, one of them said to the other: "Get up and come with us." So the two of them got up and went to their house. They opened the Qur'an and began turning its pages. They looked through Surah al-Baqarah, then the two of them said: "We have not found those verses in it." Then they looked through Surah al-Nisa until they reached this verse: "And whoever does evil or wrongs himself and then seeks forgiveness from Allah Almighty will find Allah Almighty Forgiving and Merciful." They said: "This is one verse." Then they began turning the pages of Surah Al Imran until they reached this saying of Allah Almighty: "When they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, they remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins, and none forgives sins except Allah Almighty, and they do not persist in what they have done while they know." The two of them said: "This is the other verse." Then the two of them closed the Qur'an, came to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Are these the two verses?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is jayyid (good), except that the narrator Ibrahim did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
