Rifa'ah al-Qitbani narrates: I went to al-Mukhtar. He placed a cushion for me and said: "Had my brother Jibril not just got up from it, I would have placed it for you." Rifa'ah said: I intended to strike off his head, but then I remembered a hadith which Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Hamiq (may Allah be pleased with him) had narrated to me; he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any believer who grants another believer safety for his life and then kills him, I am free of such a killer." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah has, from this Companion,
recorded this narration: "Whoever grants a man safety for his life and then kills him will carry the banner of treachery on the Day of Resurrection."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Hamiq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever grants a man safety for his life and then kills him, I am free of the killer, even if the one killed is a disbeliever."
Al-Tabarani recorded it with many chains, and one of them has narrators who are thiqat (trustworthy).

Rifa'ah al-Qitbani narrates that a companion of his said: "It would be good if we went to al-Mukhtar bin Abi Ubayd, for he is calling (people) to support the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So we went and came to him in (the palace of) al-Khawarnaq while he was sitting. He said: "Shall I not show you a sword?" Then he called for a sword which was in a sling, and on it were three layers. He drew the sword from it, and the ring travelled to its near end, then it travelled back towards the sheath of the sword. He took it and put it on his finger. I said: "By Allah, he is a sorcerer!" I leaned towards the hilt of the sword, but then I remembered the statement of Sayyiduna Sulayman bin Mus-hir (may Allah be pleased with him) which he reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: "When a man grants you safety, do not kill him."
Al-Tabarani recorded it and said: Abu Mus-hir narrated it in this way from Sayyiduna Sulayman bin Mus-hir (may Allah be pleased with him), and that is an error; the correct narration is the one which al-Suddi and others narrated from Rifa'ah, from Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Hamiq (may Allah be pleased with him). It was also narrated via Abdullah bin Maysarah al-Harithi al-Wasiti, from Abu Ukkashah, from Rifa'ah; he erred in its chain, and that narration is coming next.

Abu Ukkashah narrates that Rifa'ah al-Bajali went to al-Mukhtar bin Abi Ubayd, and al-Mukhtar said to him: "Jibril has just left me." Rifa'ah said: I remembered a hadith which Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Surad (may Allah be pleased with him) had narrated to me, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever grants another man safety for his life must not kill him." Rifa'ah said: I had already granted al-Mukhtar safety for his life; had it not been for that, I would have cut off his head.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and he judged that Abdullah bin Maysarah erred in it.

Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever grants someone safety and then kills him, the Fire becomes obligatory for him, even if the one killed is a disbeliever."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Sulayman bin Ahmad al-Wasiti, who is matruk (abandoned).
