بَابُ السَّتْرِ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ

عَنْ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنِ مُخَلَّدٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ :
" مَنْ سَتَرَ مُسْلِمًا فِي الدُّنْيَا ، سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ، وَمَنْ نَجَّى مَكْرُوبًا ، فَكَّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كُرْبَةً مِنْ كُرَبِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ، وَمَنْ كَانَ فِي حَاجَةِ أَخِيهِ ، كَانَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي حَاجَتِهِ " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَتْ أَحَادِيثُ فِي الْمَعْنَى فِي الرِّحْلَةِ فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ .
" مَنْ سَتَرَ مُسْلِمًا فِي الدُّنْيَا ، سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ، وَمَنْ نَجَّى مَكْرُوبًا ، فَكَّ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كُرْبَةً مِنْ كُرَبِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ، وَمَنْ كَانَ فِي حَاجَةِ أَخِيهِ ، كَانَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي حَاجَتِهِ " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَتْ أَحَادِيثُ فِي الْمَعْنَى فِي الرِّحْلَةِ فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ .
Sayyiduna Maslamah bin Mukhallad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever conceals (the faults of) a Muslim in this world, Allah Almighty will conceal him in this world and the Hereafter; whoever rescues one in distress, Allah Almighty will remove from him one of the distresses of the Day of Resurrection; and whoever is occupied in fulfilling his brother's need, Allah Almighty fulfils his need."

وَعَنْ أَرْطَاةَ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ السَّكُونِيِّ :
أَنَّ آتِيًا أَتَاهُ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ لِي جَارًا يَشْرَبُ الْخَمْرَ ، وَيَأْتِي الْقَبِيحَ ، فَأَنْهِ أَمْرَهُ إِلَى السُّلْطَانِ ؟ فَقَالَ : لَقَدْ قَتَلْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ مَا يَسُرُّنِي أَنْ قَتَلْتُ مِثْلَهُمْ وَأَنِّي كَشَفْتُ قِنَاعَ مُسْلِمٍ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .

It is mentioned about Sayyiduna Artah bin al-Mundhir al-Sakuni (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to him and said: "My neighbour drinks wine and does shameful deeds; shall I take his matter to the ruler?" Sayyiduna Artah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I killed ninety-nine of the polytheists in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It would not please me, having killed the like of them, to then expose the faults of a Muslim."

وَعَنْ لَقِيطِ بْنِ أَرْطَاةَ السُّكُونِيِّ :
أَنَّ رَجُلًا ، قَالَ لَهُ : إِنَّ لَنَا جَارًا يَشْرَبُ الْخَمْرَ ، وَيَأْتِي الْقَبِيحَ ، فَأَرْفَعُ أَمْرَهُ إِلَى السُّلْطَانِ ؟ قَالَ : لَقَدْ قَتَلْتُ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - مَا أُحِبُّ أَنِّي قَتَلْتُ مِثْلَهُمْ ، وَأَنِّي كَشَفْتُ قِنَاعَ مُسْلِمٍ .

It is mentioned about Sayyiduna Laqit bin Artah al-Sakuni (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said to him: "We have a neighbour who drinks wine and commits evil deeds; shall I take his matter to the ruler?" He said: "While (living) with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I killed ninety-nine people (in the path of Allah). I would not like, after killing so many people, to expose the faults of a Muslim."

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ :
قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : " يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، ، يَا مَعْشَرَ مَنْ آمَنَ بِلِسَانِهِ وَلَمْ يَخْلُصِ الْإِيمَانُ إِلَى قَلْبِهِ " - حَتَّى أَسْمَعَ الْعَوَاتِقَ فِي خُدُورِهِنَّ - " لَا تُؤْذُوا الْمُسْلِمِينَ ، وَلَا تَتَبَّعُوا عَوْرَاتِهِمْ ; فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ تَتَبَّعَ عَوْرَةَ أَخِيهِ ، تَتَبَّعَ اللَّهُ عَوْرَتَهُ حَتَّى يَخْرِقَهَا عَلَيْهِ فِي بَطْنِ بَيْتِهِ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ شَيْبَةَ الطَّائِفِيُّ ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : " يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، ، يَا مَعْشَرَ مَنْ آمَنَ بِلِسَانِهِ وَلَمْ يَخْلُصِ الْإِيمَانُ إِلَى قَلْبِهِ " - حَتَّى أَسْمَعَ الْعَوَاتِقَ فِي خُدُورِهِنَّ - " لَا تُؤْذُوا الْمُسْلِمِينَ ، وَلَا تَتَبَّعُوا عَوْرَاتِهِمْ ; فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ تَتَبَّعَ عَوْرَةَ أَخِيهِ ، تَتَبَّعَ اللَّهُ عَوْرَتَهُ حَتَّى يَخْرِقَهَا عَلَيْهِ فِي بَطْنِ بَيْتِهِ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ شَيْبَةَ الطَّائِفِيُّ ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said: "O people! O assembly of those who have believed with their tongues while faith has not reached their hearts!" The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made his voice reach the women in their seclusion. (He said:) "Do not harm the Muslims and do not pry into their hidden affairs, for whoever pries into his brother's hidden affairs, Allah Almighty will expose his hidden affairs, to the point that He will expose them even while he is inside his own house (and still the matter will come to light)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain contains Isma'il bin Shaybah al-Ta'ifi, who is da'if (weak).

وَعَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - :
" لَا يَرَى مُؤْمِنٌ مِنْ أَخِيهِ عَوْرَةً ، فَيَسْتُرُهَا عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا أَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ الْجَنَّةَ " .
وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ : " إِلَّا أَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا الْجَنَّةَ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ وَالصَّغِيرِ بِنَحْوِهِ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُمَا ضَعِيفٌ .
" لَا يَرَى مُؤْمِنٌ مِنْ أَخِيهِ عَوْرَةً ، فَيَسْتُرُهَا عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا أَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ الْجَنَّةَ " .
وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ : " إِلَّا أَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا الْجَنَّةَ " .

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any believer who sees something of his brother that ought to be concealed and conceals it for him, Allah Almighty will admit him into Paradise." In one report the words are: "Allah Almighty will admit him into Paradise because of it."

وَعَنْ نُبَيْطِ بْنِ شَرِيطٍ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - :
" مَنْ سَتَرَ حُرْمَةً مُؤْمِنَةً سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ مِنَ النَّارِ " .

" مَنْ سَتَرَ حُرْمَةً مُؤْمِنَةً سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ مِنَ النَّارِ " .

Sayyiduna Nubayt bin Sharit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever conceals the honour of a believer, Allah Almighty will shield him from the Fire."

وَعَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ :
" مَنْ سَتَرَ عَوْرَةً ، فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا مَوْءُودَةً مِنْ قَبْرِهَا " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ طَلْحَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ . وَرَوَاهُ بِإِسْنَادٍ آخَرَ فِيهِ أَبُو مَعْشَرٍ وَهُوَ أَخَفُّ ضَعْفًا مِنْ طَلْحَةَ . وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
" مَنْ سَتَرَ عَوْرَةً ، فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا مَوْءُودَةً مِنْ قَبْرِهَا " .

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever conceals (the faults of) someone, it is as though he has given life to a girl buried alive in her grave."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Talhah bin Zayd, who is da'if (weak). He also recorded it with another chain that contains Abu Ma'shar, who is less weak than Talhah. The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - :
" مَنْ رَأَى مِنْ أَخِيهِ رَتْقَةً فِي دِينِهِ فَسَتَرَهُ عَلَيْهَا ، كَانَتْ لَهُ حَسَنَةَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ أَبُو صَالِحٍ الْخُوزِيُّ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
" مَنْ رَأَى مِنْ أَخِيهِ رَتْقَةً فِي دِينِهِ فَسَتَرَهُ عَلَيْهَا ، كَانَتْ لَهُ حَسَنَةَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " .

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever sees some flaw in his brother's religion and then conceals it, that will be a good deed for him on the Day of Resurrection."

وَعَنْ شِهَابٍ ، رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَقُولُ :
" مَنْ سَتَرَ عَلَى مُؤْمِنٍ فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا مَيِّتًا " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ مِنْ طَرِيقِ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الذَّيَّالِ عَنْ أَبِي سِنَانٍ الْمَدَنِيِّ وَلَمْ أَعْرِفْهُمَا ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .
" مَنْ سَتَرَ عَلَى مُؤْمِنٍ فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا مَيِّتًا " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ مِنْ طَرِيقِ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الذَّيَّالِ عَنْ أَبِي سِنَانٍ الْمَدَنِيِّ وَلَمْ أَعْرِفْهُمَا ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .
Sayyiduna Shihab (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever conceals the hidden affair of a believer, it is as though he has given life to the dead."
Al-Tabarani recorded it via Muslim bin Abi al-Dhayyal from Abu Sinan al-Madani; I do not know either of them. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

وَعَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ : خَرَجَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ عَلَى أَهْلِ الدَّارِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ : مَنْ جَاءَ مِنْكُمْ مُسْتَفْتِيًا فَلْيَجْلِسْ عَلَى ثَفِيَّةٍ ، وَمَنْ جَاءَ مِنْكُمْ مُخَاصِمًا فَلْيُكْرِمْ خَصْمَهُ حَتَّى نَقْضِيَ بَيْنَهُمَا ، وَمَنْ جَاءَ مِنْكُمْ يُطْلِعُنَا عَلَى عَوْرَةٍ سَتَرَهَا اللَّهُ ، فَلْيَسْتَتِرْ بِسِتْرِ اللَّهِ ، وَلْيَسْتُرْهَا إِلَى مَنْ يَمْلِكُ مَغْفِرَتَهَا ، فَإِنِّي لَا أَمْلِكُ مَغْفِرَتَهَا ، أُقِيمُ عَلَيْهِ حَدًّا وَبِأَبْعَارِهَا .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْهُذَلِيُّ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .

Masruq narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came out of the house to the people who were outside and said to them: "Whoever of you has come to ask for a ruling, let him sit in his place. Whoever of you has come with a dispute, let him bring the opposing party as well, so that we may judge between them. And whoever of you has come to inform us about someone's hidden affair which Allah Almighty has concealed, let him keep Allah's covering in place and entrust that concealed matter to the One who has the power to forgive it, for I do not have the power to forgive it; I would only carry out the prescribed punishment (hadd) on that person and punish him."

وَعَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ :
جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُتَحَنِّطًا ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ وَوَجَدَ رِيحَ الْحَنُوطِ ، قَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ هَذَا ، قَالَ : فَجَاءَهُ ، فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ وَقَعَ عَلَى جَارِيَةِ امْرَأَتِهِ ، وَسَأَلَهُ أَنْ يُقِيمَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ ، قَالَ : اسْتَغْفِرِ اللَّهَ وَتُبْ إِلَيْهِ ، وَاسْتُرْ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ ، وَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تُعْتِقَهَا فَافْعَلْ .

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُتَحَنِّطًا ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ وَوَجَدَ رِيحَ الْحَنُوطِ ، قَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ هَذَا ، قَالَ : فَجَاءَهُ ، فَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ وَقَعَ عَلَى جَارِيَةِ امْرَأَتِهِ ، وَسَأَلَهُ أَنْ يُقِيمَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ ، قَالَ : اسْتَغْفِرِ اللَّهَ وَتُبْ إِلَيْهِ ، وَاسْتُرْ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ ، وَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تُعْتِقَهَا فَافْعَلْ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ . وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ لَمْ يُدْرِكِ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، وَلَكِنَّ رِجَالَهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Ibrahim al-Nakha'i narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), having applied hanut (the perfume used for the dead). When Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he sensed the scent of hanut from him and said: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of this one." The narrator says: The man came to him and mentioned that he had had intercourse with his wife's slave girl, and he asked him to carry out the prescribed punishment (hadd) on him. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty, repent to Him, and conceal your own fault; and if you are able to, free that slave girl."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. The narrator Ibrahim did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), but its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
