Sayyiduna Asim bin Amr bin Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: After the Battle of Uhud some men of the tribes of Adal and al-Qarah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They said: "O Messenger of Allah, Islam is found among us; send with us some men from among your Companions who will acquaint us with the teachings of the religion, teach us the Qur'an, and instruct us in the teachings of Islam." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent six men from among his Companions; one of them was Sayyiduna Marthad bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was an ally of Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: after this he narrated the whole incident. The narrator states: As for Sayyiduna Marthad bin Abi Marthad (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Bukayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Asim bin Abi al-Aqlah (may Allah be pleased with him), they said: "By Allah, we will never accept any covenant or any pact from an idolater." They kept fighting those people, until those (disbelieving) people martyred them.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ وَحَدِيثُهُ حَسَنٌ وَفِيهِ ضَعْفٌ .
Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates: The account of Sayyiduna Khubayb bin Adi bin Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to Banu Amr bin Awf, Sayyiduna Asim bin Thabit bin Abi al-Aqlah bin Amr bin Awf, and Sayyiduna Zayd bin al-Dathinah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to Banu Bayadah, is this: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent them to Makkah to gather intelligence, so that they might bring him news about Quraysh. These people travelled along the Najdiyyah route until they reached al-Raji', a place in Najd, when the people of the tribe of Banu Lihyan, which is a branch of the tribe of Hudhayl, confronted them. Asim bin Thabit fought back with his sword until he was martyred. Sayyiduna Khubayb and Sayyiduna Zayd bin al-Dathinah climbed up the mountain, and the people could not reach them, until those people made a covenant with these two (that they would not harm them). So these two came down to them. Those people tied up both of them, then brought the two of them to Makkah and sold them both to Quraysh. As for Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him), Uqbah bin al-Harith bought him, and Abu Ihab bin Aziz bin Qays bin Suwayd bin Rabi'ah bin Adas bin Abdullah bin Darim also became his partner in purchasing him. Qays bin Suwayd bin Rabi'ah was in fact the maternal half-brother of Amir bin Nawfal; the mother of both was the daughter of Nahshal, and she was of Tamim. Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl, al-Akhnas bin Sharnun bin Ilaj bin al-Mughirah al-Thaqafi, Ubaydah bin Hakim al-Sulami then al-Dhakwani, Umayyah bin Abi Utbah bin Hammam bin Hanzalah, who belonged to Banu Darim, the sons of al-Hadrami, Sa'yah bin Abdullah bin Abi Qays, who belonged to Banu Amir bin Lu'ayy, and Safwan bin Umayyah bin Khalaf bin Wahb al-Jumahi (took part in this purchase). These people handed Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) over to Uqbah bin al-Harith. Uqbah imprisoned him in his house, and he remained in his house for as long as Allah willed. A woman from the family of Uqbah bin al-Harith bin Amir used to open the door of his prison and give him food. He said to that woman: "When these people intend to kill me, inform me about it beforehand." When those people intended to kill him and that woman informed him, he said: "Bring me a razor so that I may shave my pubic hair with it." (The woman brought him a razor.) Meanwhile that woman's son came into his room, while the razor was in his hand. He took hold of the boy's hand and said: "Shall I harm you?" The woman said: "This is not what I think of you." Then he handed the razor to the woman and said: "I was only joking." The people who had jointly bought him took him out with them, and the people of Makkah also came out with them. They took a wooden beam with them, until at the place called al-Tan'im they fixed that beam in the ground and crucified him on that beam. Uqbah bin al-Harith was the one who killed him. Abu al-Husayn was a child, and he was with the people. Uqbah killed him in retaliation for al-Harith bin Amir, who had been killed at the Battle of Badr in a state of disbelief. At the time of being killed, Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: "Untie me so that I may first offer two rak'ahs." Those people untied him, and he offered two brief rak'ahs and completed the prayer. Then he said: "Were it not for the fear that you would think I was doing so perhaps out of fear of death, I would have offered these two rak'ahs at length; but for that very reason I have offered them briefly." Then he said: "O Allah, I see before me nothing but the enemy. O Allah, I find no messenger who could be sent to Your Messenger, so convey my greeting of peace to him on my behalf." Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about this. When those people raised Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) upon the beam, Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah, count them, have them killed, and do not spare any one of them." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred by the sons of those idolaters who had been killed at the Battle of Badr. When those people brought their weapons towards him, and when he had already been crucified, they called out to him loudly and said: "Would you like Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to be in your place?" Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No, by Allah, the Mighty! I would not even like a thorn to prick his foot in exchange for my life." At this they began to laugh. When those people raised Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) upon the beam, Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him) recited these verses: "The confederates (of the enemy) have gathered around me; they have assembled their tribes and gathered every kind of crowd. They have gathered their sons and their women, and brought me near to a long, sturdy palm trunk. For my exile and my distress, and for all that these people have prepared for my killing, I make my complaint to Allah Almighty alone. O Lord of the Throne, grant me patience over what these people intend for me: that they cut my flesh to pieces, and my hope (of escape) has ended. All of this is happening in the path of that God who, if He wills, will place blessing even in the lifeless pieces of my body. By my life, if I die as a Muslim, I do not care in what condition Allah Almighty gives me death." As for Sayyiduna Zayd bin al-Dathinah, Safwan bin Umayyah had bought him; he killed him in retaliation for his father, Umayyah bin Khalaf. Nistas, the slave of Banu Jumah, killed him. Both of them were killed at the place called al-Tan'im. Amr bin Umayyah buried Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) composed these verses about Sayyiduna Khubayb (may Allah be pleased with him): "Would that Khubayb's covenant had not betrayed him; would that Khubayb had known these people. Zuhayr bin al-Agharr and Jami' bought you, and both of them have long been committing forbidden deeds. You first granted protection, and when you had granted protection you broke it, while you were screaming on the edges of al-Raji'."
