Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10342

Amr bin Murrah narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Juhaynah and Muzaynah against Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib, who had broken away from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). They had not yet gone far when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you! On what basis are you sending two shrewd groups who, in the days of ignorance, were bent on annihilating each other, and then Islam came to them while their mutual grudge still remains?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to come back, until they came and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "O Muzaynah, greet Juhaynah; O Juhaynah, greet Muzaynah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Amr bin Murrah as commander over both armies, that is, the tribes of Juhaynah and Muzaynah, and then said: "Set off with the blessing of Allah Almighty." So they set off against Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith. Allah Almighty routed the enemy, and many of Abu Sufyan's companions were killed. That is why Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith composed these verses: "Against Juhaynah (the people of that tribe), with the Mashrafiyyah (swords), who will blame me and who will be my helper? They are a thousand men led by Ibn Murrah; they are squadrons that bring destruction. They set out, they carried off the weapons, and they look to Muzaynah for (pardon) concerning us." Abu Muhammad says: Abdullah bin Dawud, Yasir bin Suwayd, and Sinan bin Yasar bin Suwayd, who is his brother, and Muslim bin Yasar, who is the son of Yasar bin Suwayd. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) In the original from which I noted this report it was written like this; I could not work out what it means.
