Sayyiduna Jundab bin Makith al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ghalib bin Abjar al-Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to Kalb Layth, to Banu al-Mulawwih, who lived at the place called al-Kadid. He ordered him to raid them. He set out, and I too was part of that expedition. We kept going until, when we reached the place called Kadid, we came upon al-Harith bin Malik bin al-Barsa' al-Laythi. We seized him, and he said: "I have come to accept Islam." Sayyiduna Ghalib bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If you have come to accept Islam, then if you are tied up for one day and one night, it will do you no harm; and if your purpose was something other than that, we will investigate it." The narrator says: So he tied him up and appointed a black man who was with us as his guard, and said: "Stay with him until we pass by you on our way back. If he tries to struggle with you, strike off his head." The narrator says: We kept going until we came to the low-lying part of the place called al-Kadid. We camped at that place in the evening, after Asr. My companions sent me to scout. I went towards a hillock so that I could see the people from there, and I climbed onto that hillock; this was a little before Maghrib. One of their men came out of the settlement and saw that there was someone on the hillock. He said to his wife: "By Allah, I see something dark on this hillock that I did not see here in the early part of the day. Make sure that the dogs have not damaged any of your vessels." The woman said: "No, by Allah, I do not find anything missing." The man said: "Then hand me a bow and two arrows." The woman handed them to him. The man shot an arrow at me, which came and struck me in my side. I pulled it out and put it down, but I did not move. Then he shot a second arrow at me, which struck me at the top of my shoulder. I pulled that out too, and did not move. He said to his wife: "By Allah, both my arrows have hit it; had it been something that moves, it would have moved. When morning comes, look for my two arrows and take them, lest the dogs chew them and ruin them." The narrator says: We gave those people time, until, when evening came, they had milked their animals, made them kneel and settled down, and part of the night had passed, we attacked them. We killed some of them and drove their animals along with us. When we turned them back for the return, one of them went out to call people with a shout; he was seeking help. We too left that place quickly. We passed by al-Harith bin al-Barsa' and his companion, and we took them along with us as well. Then the man who had shouted came towards us, and he brought something we had no strength to face, until, when only the low-lying part of the valley remained between us and them, a flood came at that moment and became a barrier between us and them. Allah Almighty had sent that flood from wherever He willed, although we had not seen any rain before that or at that time. Something came that none of them had the power to cross. I remember about us that we were standing still while those people were looking at us; none of them had the strength to advance, and we kept moving swiftly away from them, until we climbed up al-Mushallal (a hill named so), then came down from it, and so with what was in our possession we left the enemy helpless. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded the opening part of this report.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy); Ibn Ishaq explicitly stated that he heard it directly, in the report of al-Tabarani.
