It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu Wahb al-Kala'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked: Why did he give preference to the ashqar? He replied: Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out an expedition, and the man who came with the good news of victory was riding an "ashqar" (that is, a deep reddish-chestnut) horse.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). His words "Sayyiduna Abu Wahb al-Kala'i (may Allah be pleased with him)" are a mistake, because the narrator Aqil bin Shabib narrated only from Sayyiduna Abu Wahb al-Jushami (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Takhrij «
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The blessing of horses is in their deep reddish-chestnut colour, and the most blessed of them in forelock is the one with a bright blaze on its forehead and white markings on its legs, with its right foreleg free (perhaps meaning that it has no white marking on it)." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud and Imam al-Tirmidhi sufficed with recording only these words of the narration: "The blessing of horses is in their deep reddish-chestnut colour."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Faraj bin Yahya, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you intend to take part in battle, buy a horse that has a bright blaze on its forehead, white markings on its (three) legs, and none on its (front) right leg; in this way you will remain safe and you will also obtain spoils."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ubayd bin al-Sabbah, who is da'if (weak).

Hadith Takhrij «
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Beware of sluggish horses, for if it meets (the enemy) it will flee, and if you obtain spoils, you will commit embezzlement."
Imam Ahmad recorded it. Perhaps by horses here are meant the people who own the horses, and Allah knows best. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah; his hadith is hasan (good), and there is weakness in him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
