Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept away from his wives. Shu'bah says: I think the words in the narration are: he kept away for one month. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at that time in an upper room on a mat, and the mark of the mat was on his back. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! The Kisras drink from vessels of gold and silver, and this is your condition." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Their good things have been given to them in the life of this world." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The month is this much and this much," meaning it is sometimes of twenty-nine days as well. The third time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) folded down his thumb.
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Dawud bin Farahij, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Yahya bin Ma'in and others called him da'if (weak).

Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه احمد فى المسند (298/2) ، أخرجه مسند أحمد برقم: 7903»
It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he narrates: I wanted to ask Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) about this statement of Allah Almighty: "If the two of you support one another against him." But I was in awe of him, until I went to perform Hajj with him. I thought, "If I do not ask him during this Hajj, then I will never be able to ask him." When we had completed the Hajj, I reached him once while he was in the lower part of (the valley of) Marr, having stayed behind to relieve himself. He said, "Welcome to you, O cousin of the Messenger of Allah! What do you need?" I said, "There is something I wanted to ask you about, O Commander of the Believers, but I was also in awe of you." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Ask about whatever you wish, for we too did not know anything until we learned it." I said, "Tell me about this statement of Allah Almighty, 'If the two of you': who are these two women?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You will not ask anyone who knows about this better than me. When we lived in Makkah, none of us would talk with his wife; she was the servant of the house. When a man had need of her, he would come to her and fulfil his need. When we came to Madinah, our wives began to learn from the women of the Ansar, and they began to talk with us and answer us back. Once I told some boys to do a certain task, and my wife said, 'Rather, do it in such and such a way.' I went towards her with a stick and struck her with it. She said, 'O son of al-Khattab! I am amazed at you. You want no one to speak to you, whereas the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) speak with him (peace and blessings be upon him).' I went out and came to Hafsah and said, 'O my daughter! Be careful that you do not speak (back) to the Messenger of Allah and do not ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for anything, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has neither dinars nor dirhams to give you. If you need anything, even if you need oil to put on your head, then tell me.' When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the morning prayer, he would remain seated at his place of prayer and the people would sit around him, and he would stay seated until the sun rose. Then he would go to his wives, one woman after another, greeting them and praying for them, and he would stay with the one whose turn it was that day. Once a container of honey was given as a gift to Sayyidah Hafsah bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with her) from Ta'if (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) from Makkah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in and greeted her, Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) would keep the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and give him honey to eat or to drink. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) wondered why the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed at her place. She said to her Abyssinian slave girl, whose name was Khadra', 'When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) goes to Hafsah, go into her house and see what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does.' The slave girl told Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that he drinks honey there. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent word to her companions (that is, the other Mothers of the Believers), told them about this, and said, 'When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) comes to you, you are to say: We detect the smell of maghafir from you.' Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Have you eaten anything today? I detect the smell of maghafir from you.'" The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) strongly disliked that any smell should be detected from him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "That was only honey. By Allah! I will never eat it." The narrator says: Then when Sayyidah Hafsah's day came, she said, "O Messenger of Allah! I have some business with my father; my allowance is with him. If you permit me, I will go to him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her permission. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for his slave woman Mariyah, and she came into the house of Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had conjugal relations with her. Meanwhile Sayyidah Hafsah came back and found the door closed, so she sat down by the door. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out, he was "far'" and his sweat was dripping. Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Why are you weeping?" She said, "You gave me permission only for this purpose: that you bring your slave woman into my house and then have conjugal relations with her on my bed. You would not have done this with any of your other wives. By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! It is not right for you to do this." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "By Allah! You are not speaking rightly. Is she not my slave woman, whom Allah Almighty has made lawful for me? I make you my witness and say that she is unlawful for me, and by this I seek your pleasure. But be careful not to tell any of my other wives about this; this matter is a trust with you." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had left, Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) knocked on the wall between her house and that of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said, "Receive good news! The Messenger of Allah has made his slave woman unlawful for himself, and Allah Almighty has relieved us of her." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "By Allah! I suspect that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will be troubled because of this slave woman." Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "O Prophet! Why do you make unlawful what Allah has made lawful for you?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "And if the two of you support one another against him." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So this refers to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her). People used to say that these two women did not hide anything from each other. (Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says:) I had a brother from the Ansar. When I was present (with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) and he had gone to his lands and the like, I would tell him what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said, and when I was away for work, he would tell me. One day he came to me; in those days we were fearful of Jabalah bin al-Ayham al-Ghassani. He said, "Do you not know what has happened?" I said, "What has happened? Perhaps Jabalah bin al-Ayham al-Ghassani is coming?" He said, "No, it is something even more troubling than that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the morning prayer and did not sit as before, nor did he go to his wives as was his usual practice. He has secluded himself in the upper room and has left the people troubled; they do not understand what the matter is." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came, and the people in the mosque were troubled and did not understand. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O people! Stay as you are." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at that time in the upper room; a ladder had been made for him, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) climbed it. He said to the black slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was acting as doorkeeper, "Ask permission for Umar bin al-Khattab." He asked permission for me and I went in. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was then in the upper room, in which there was a mat and some hides were hanging. The mark of the mat had come onto the side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and under his head was a leather pillow stuffed with fibre. When I saw him in this state, I wept. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Why are you weeping?" I said, "The people of Persia and the people of Rome lie on brocade and silk." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Their good things have been given to them early (that is, in this world), and we will receive ours in the Hereafter." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is your matter? I have left the people troubled, waiting for some news from you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I have separated myself from these women." (Perhaps the words here should have been: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "Have you divorced them?") The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "No, rather there was some displeasure between me and my wives, so I preferred not to go to them for one month." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I went out and came to the people and said, "O people! Go back, for there is some matter between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his wives, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has preferred to remain apart." Then I came to Hafsah and said, "O my daughter! Do you talk back to the Messenger of Allah, show anger before him and show harshness of temper?" Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "Now I will never say anything to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he dislikes." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then I went to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was my maternal aunt, and I said to her the same thing I had said to Hafsah. She said, "O Umar bin al-Khattab! I am amazed at you. You start talking about everything, until now you want to interfere even between the Messenger of Allah and his wives. Why should we not show anger to the Messenger of Allah when your wives also show anger to you?" Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "O Prophet! Say to your wives: If you desire the life of this world and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and release you in a fitting manner." Until he finished it (that is, he recited the whole verse). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith reported from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is mentioned in the Sahih in a greatly abridged form.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth. Abd al-Malik bin Shu'ayb bin al-Layth says he is thiqah (trustworthy) and reliable, while Ahmad and others declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said concerning the man who takes an oath of ila' from his wife: if that man wishes, he may take her back within the four months; and if he firmly resolves upon divorce, then the same waiting period ('iddah) will be binding on the woman as is binding on a divorced woman.
Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Yusuf bin Khalid al-Samti, and he is da'if (weak).

Ibrahim narrates: A man named Abdullah bin Unays took an oath of ila' from his wife. Four months passed before he had intercourse with her; then, after the four months had passed, he had intercourse with her, not remembering his oath. Then he came to Alqamah bin Qays and mentioned this to him. The two of them came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about it. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "She has become irrevocably separated (ba'inah) from you. Now propose marriage to her afresh." The man proposed marriage to her afresh and gave her one ratl of silver as dowry.
Tabarani recorded it. The narrators of its chain are the narrators of the Sahih, but the chain is munqati' (broken), because Ibrahim did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad narrates: A paternal cousin of his took an oath of ila' from his wife for ten days. Then he went away somewhere. When he returned, four months had passed in the meantime, and he had intercourse with his wife. Then he met a man who reminded him of his oath. So he came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about it. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) made him swear that (he would say): "I did not know about this." Then he sent for his wife and made her too swear by the name of Allah that she did not know about it. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) instructed the man to propose marriage to the woman afresh.
Tabarani recorded it. Wabarah bin Abd al-Rahman did not hear from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and the narrator Layth bin Abi Sulaym is a mudallis.
