Hasan narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was invited to a feast held on the occasion of a circumcision, but he refused to go. It was said to him (about this), and he said: "In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we neither used to attend circumcision feasts nor were we invited to them."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir recorded it.
In a narration of al-Tabarani the words are: He narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was invited to a meal. It was said to him: "Do you know what meal this is? This is the meal for a girl's circumcision." He said: "This is something we did not see in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." And he refused to eat that food. The narrators of the first report include Muhammad bin Ishaq, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), while the narrators of the second report include Abu Hamzah al-Attar, whom Abu Hatim declared thiqah (trustworthy) and others declared da'if (weak).
