Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "My father has passed away, and he was not able to perform the obligatory Hajj." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is your view about this: if your father owed a debt, would you have paid it on his behalf?" The man said: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then this too is a debt binding upon him; pay it."
Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded this narration, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! May I perform Hajj on behalf of my mother, who has passed away?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is your view about this: if your mother owed a debt and you paid it, would it not have been accepted from you?" The woman replied: "Yes!" (that is, it would have been). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed the woman to perform Hajj on her (mother's) behalf. Another woman came and said: "I perform Hajj with my son"; he was a nursing infant or a young child. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Very well."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Suwayd Abu Hatim, whom Abu Zur'ah and, according to one report, Yahya bin Ma'in declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and, according to one report, Yahya bin Ma'in called him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever performs Hajj on behalf of a deceased person, then the one on whose behalf the Hajj was performed also receives a reward like that person's; whoever gives a fasting person something to break his fast with receives a reward like his (the fasting person's); and whoever invites to good receives a reward like the reward of the one who acts upon it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Yazid bin Bahram, about whom I have found no one giving his biography, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
