Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "My father is a very old man; he is not able to perform Hajj." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you think: if your father owed a debt and you paid it on his behalf, would it be accepted from you?" He replied: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then Allah Almighty is more merciful; perform Hajj on behalf of your father."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
