عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ : لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الْفَرَائِضِ فِي سُورَةِ النِّسَاءِ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَنِ الْحَبْسِ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ الْمِقْدَامُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When the verse concerning the shares of inheritance in Surah al-Nisa' was revealed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade habs (that is, reserving something exclusively for a particular purpose).

وَعَنْ فَضَالَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " لَا حَبْسَ " .

Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "There is to be no habs."

وَعَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بِشْرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ : لَمَّا قَدِمَ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ الْمَدِينَةَ اسْتَنْكَرُوا الْمَاءَ ، وَكَانَتْ لِرَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي غِفَارٍ عَيْنٌ يُقَالُ لَهَا : رُومَةَ ، وَكَانَ يَبِيعُ مِنْهَا الْقِرْبَةَ بِمُدٍّ . فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " بِعْنِيهَا بِعَيْنٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ " . فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، لَيْسَ لِي وَلَا لِعِيَالِي غَيْرُهَا ، لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ ذَلِكَ . فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عُثْمَانَ فَاشْتَرَاهَا بِخَمْسَةٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ أَلْفَ دِرْهَمٍ ، ثُمَّ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَتَجْعَلُ لِي مِثْلَ الَّذِي جَعَلْتَهُ لَهُ ، عَيْنًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ إِنِ اشْتَرَيْتُهَا ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ " . قَالَ : قَدِ اشْتَرَيْتُهَا ، وَجَعَلْتُهَا لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ .

Abu Salamah Bishr bin Bashir al-Aslami narrates from his father: When the Muhajirun came to Madinah, its water did not suit them. A man from Banu Ghifar had a well called Rumah, and he used to sell a waterskin of it for a mudd. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Sell it to me in exchange for a well in Paradise." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I and my family have no other source of income besides it; I cannot do that." When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) learned of this, he bought it for thirty-five thousand dirhams. Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you make me the same offer you made to that man, that I will get a well in Paradise if I buy this well?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: "I have bought it, and I dedicate it to the Muslims."
