Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful to take zakah for a well-off person, nor for a strong person with sound limbs (that is, one who is not disabled)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, and he has been criticised.

Ubaydullah bin Adi bin al-Khiyar narrates: Two men came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the Farewell Hajj. They asked him about charity (or: they asked him for charity). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze and looked them over carefully, and he observed that they were men of strong build. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, I will help you both, but there is no share in zakah for a well-off person, nor for a strong person able to earn."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Mina' narrates: Some people came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); this was during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). They said: "Give us our stipends." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I hold no stipend of yours. Your stipends are paid from the fay' (spoils taken without fighting) and from the jizyah, and the zakah will be given only to those entitled to it." When the people kept coming to him repeatedly, he took the keys to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), put them down before him, and said: "I will not be a treasurer."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The narrator Mina' has been heavily criticised, and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy).
