Questioning in the grave

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We attended a funeral with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he had finished burying the deceased and the people had gone back, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "At this moment he (the deceased) can hear even the sound of your sandals. Munkar and Nakir will come to him. Their eyes will be like brass cauldrons, their teeth will protrude like the horns of cattle, and their voices will be like thunder. The two angels will make him sit up and ask him whom he used to worship and who his Prophet was. If he is one who used to worship Allah, he will say: 'I used to worship Allah Almighty, and my Prophet is Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who brought us clear proofs; we believed in him and followed him.' This is what is meant by the saying of Allah Almighty: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in this world and in the Hereafter.' Then it will be said to the deceased: 'You lived upon certainty, upon it you died, and upon it you will be raised.' Then a door to Paradise will be opened for him, and his grave will be made spacious for him. If the deceased is one of the people of doubt, he will say: 'I do not know. I heard the people saying something, so I said it too.' It will be said to him: 'You lived upon doubt, upon it you died, and upon it you will be raised again.' Then a door to Hell will be opened for him, and scorpions and serpents will be set upon him; if one of them were to blow upon the world, nothing would ever grow where it blew. They will tear at him, and the earth will be commanded and will squeeze him until his ribs interlock."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and said: Ibn Lahi'ah is alone in narrating it. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: he has been criticised.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the deceased is buried, he hears even the sound of the people's sandals as they leave him and go back."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When I narrate a hadith to you, I will tell you (a verse of the Qur'an) confirming it. When the believer dies, he sits up in his grave and is asked: "Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?" Allah Almighty keeps him firm, and he says: "My Lord is Allah Almighty, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then his grave is made spacious for him, and room is made for him in it. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter, and Allah sends the wrongdoers astray."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The deceased hears even the sound of the people's sandals as they leave him and go back."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The two angels who come in the grave are named Munkar and Nakir. When Harut and Marut were in the heaven, their names were Azra and Aziz.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is hasan (good).
