Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I attended a funeral with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, this Ummah will be tried in its graves. When a person is buried and his companions leave him, an angel comes to him with a mace in his hand. He makes him sit up and says: 'What do you say about this man?' If the deceased is a believer, he says: 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger.' The angel says: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then a door towards Hell is opened for him, and the angel says: 'Had you disbelieved in your Lord, this would have been your abode; but since you believed in your Lord, this will be your abode.' Then a door towards Paradise is opened for him. He wants to get up and go towards it, but the angel says to him: 'Be still.' Then his grave is made spacious for him. If the deceased is a disbeliever or a hypocrite, the angel says to him: 'What do you say about this man?' He says: 'I do not know. I heard the people saying something.' The angel says: 'You neither understood, nor recited, nor were guided.' Then a door towards Paradise is opened for him, and the angel says: 'Had you believed in your Lord, this would have been your abode; but you disbelieved in your Lord, so Allah Almighty has given you this abode in its place.' Then a door towards Hell is opened for him. Then the angel strikes him with the mace, and his scream is heard by all of Allah's creation except the two kinds (mankind and jinn)." Some of those present said: "O Messenger of Allah, when an angel stands over someone with a mace, the man will surely be terrified at that moment." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Allah Almighty has said:) "Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word."
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it. He added these words: "in the life of this world and in the Hereafter; and Allah sends the wrongdoers astray, and Allah does what He wills." The narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "This Ummah will be tried in its graves. When the believer is placed in his grave and his companions leave him, an angel of fearsome aspect comes to him and says to him: 'What do you say about this man?' The believer says: 'He is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.' The angel says to him: 'Look at the abode that would have been yours in Hell. Allah Almighty has saved you from it, and in place of the abode you saw in Hell He has given you the abode you will see in Paradise.' He sees both abodes, and the believer says: 'Give me respite so that I may give this good news to my family.' It is said to him: 'Be still.' As for the hypocrite, he sits up when his family leave him, and the angel asks him: 'What do you say about this man?' He says: 'I do not know; I used to say what the people said.' It is said: 'You did not gain understanding. This is the abode that would have been yours in Paradise; Allah Almighty has given you an abode in Hell in its place.'" Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So he sees both abodes. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Every servant will be raised in the grave in the state in which he died: the believer upon his faith and the hypocrite upon his hypocrisy." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Only this part of it is reported in the Sahih: "Every servant will be raised in the grave upon what he died upon."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it. Its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, and he has been criticised; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: A Jewish woman came and asked for something to eat at my door. She said: "Give me something to eat; may Allah Almighty protect you from the trial of the Dajjal and from the trial of the punishment of the grave." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I kept the woman waiting until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is this Jewish woman saying?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What does she say?" I said: "She says: 'May Allah Almighty protect you from the trial of the Dajjal and from the trial of the punishment of the grave.'" Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, spread out both his hands and sought refuge with Allah Almighty from the trial of the Dajjal and the trial of the punishment of the grave. Then he said: "As for the trial of the Dajjal, every Prophet warned his Ummah to beware of it, and I will tell you something about him that no Prophet told his Ummah: he (that is, the Dajjal) will be one-eyed, and Allah Almighty is not one-eyed. Between the Dajjal's eyes will be written 'Kafir' (disbeliever), which every believer will read. As for the trial of the grave, you will be tried concerning me and you will be questioned about me. If he is a righteous man, he will be seated in his grave, neither alarmed nor distressed. He will be asked: 'What belief did you hold?' He will answer: 'Islam.' He will be asked: 'Who was this man who was among you?' He will answer: 'He was Sayyiduna Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah. He brought us clear proofs and guidance from Allah Almighty, and we affirmed him.' Then a window towards Hell will be opened for him, and he will see it, one part of it engulfing another. It will be said to him: 'Look at what Allah Almighty has protected you from.' Then a window from the side of Paradise will be opened for him, and he will see its splendour and adornment. It will be said to him: 'This is your abode.' It will also be said to him: 'You lived upon certainty, you died upon it, and upon it you will be raised, if Allah wills.' (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) And if he is an evil man, he sits up in his grave troubled and terrified. He is asked: 'What was your belief?' He says: 'I do not know.' He is asked: 'Who was this man who was among you?' He answers: 'I heard the people saying something, so I said the same as they said.' Then a window towards Paradise is opened for him, and he sees its splendour and adornment. It is said to him: 'Look at what Allah Almighty has turned away from you.' Then a window towards Hell is opened, and he sees it, one part of it engulfing another. It is said to him: 'This will be your abode. You lived upon doubt, you died upon it, and upon it you will be raised again, if Allah wills.' Then that man is punished."
Ahmad recorded it.

Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه الامام احمد فى المسند (140،139/6) ، أخرجه مسند أحمد برقم: 24566»
Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We attended the funeral of a man from the Ansar with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When we reached the grave, the lahd had not yet been prepared. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and we sat around him, as though there were birds on our heads. In the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a stick with which he was scratching the ground. He raised his blessed head and said: "Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave." He said this twice, or perhaps three times. Then he said: "When the believing servant is departing from this world and heading towards the Hereafter, angels with white faces descend from the sky and come to him; their faces are like the sun (in radiance and brightness). With them is a shroud from Paradise and fragrance from Paradise, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death (peace be upon him) comes and sits at his head and says: 'O tranquil soul, come out to the forgiveness and pleasure of Allah Almighty.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then the soul comes out as a drop flows from a waterskin. The Angel of Death takes it, and when he has taken it, they do not leave it in his hand even for the blink of an eye until they take it and place it in that shroud and apply that fragrance. It comes out of the body like the finest scent of musk found on the face of the earth." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angels take that soul up. Whatever group of angels they pass by with this soul, those angels say: 'Whose is this pure soul?' They reply: 'It is so-and-so, son of so-and-so,' calling him by the best of the names by which he used to be called in the world, until they bring it to the lowest heaven. They ask for the gate to be opened, and then from every heaven the angels who are close (to Allah) accompany the soul to the next heaven, until it is brought to the seventh heaven. Then Allah Almighty says: 'Record the book of My servant in Illiyyin, and return him to the earth, for from it We created them, into it We shall return them, and from it We shall bring them out once again.' Then the man's soul is returned to his body. Then two angels come to him, make him sit up and ask him: 'Who is your Lord?' He answers: 'My Lord is Allah Almighty.' The two angels ask: 'What is your religion?' He answers: 'My religion is Islam.' The two angels ask him: 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He answers: 'He is the Messenger of Allah.' Then the two angels say to him: 'What were your deeds?' He answers: 'I read the Book of Allah, believed in it and affirmed it.' Then a caller calls out from the sky: 'My servant has spoken the truth. Spread for him bedding from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise and open for him a door to Paradise.' Then the coolness and fragrance of Paradise come to him, and his grave is widened for him as far as the eye can see. Then a man comes to him with a beautiful face, splendid clothes and a pleasant scent, and says: 'Receive glad tidings of what will delight you. This is the day you were promised.' The servant says: 'Who are you? Your face is very beautiful, and you have come with good.' He says: 'I am your righteous deeds.' The servant says: 'O my Lord, establish the Hour! O my Lord, establish the Hour, so that I may return to my family and my wealth.' (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) When the time comes for the disbeliever to depart from this world and head towards the Hereafter, angels with black faces descend, bringing coarse cloth with them, and they sit around him as far as the eye can see. Then the Angel of Death comes and sits at his head and says: 'O wicked soul, come out to the displeasure and wrath of the Lord.' Then the soul spreads throughout his body, and the Angel of Death pulls it out as a thorn is pulled out of wet wool. When the Angel of Death has taken it, he does not leave it even for the blink of an eye, but puts it straight into that coarse cloth. The soul comes out of the body like the foulest-smelling carcass found on the earth. The angels take it up. Whatever group of angels they pass by, those angels ask: 'What is this foul stench?' They reply: 'It is so-and-so, son of so-and-so,' mentioning him by the worst name by which he was called in the world, until they bring it to the lowest heaven. The gate is asked to be opened for him, but it is not opened." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "The gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until a camel passes through the eye of a needle." "Allah Almighty says: 'Record his book in Sijjin, in the lowest earth.' Then his soul is flung down." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "And whoever associates partners with Allah, it is as though he had fallen from the sky and the birds snatched him away, or the wind carried him off to a far-off place." "Then the man's soul is returned to his body. Then two angels come to him, make him sit up and ask him: 'Who is your Lord?' He answers: 'Alas, alas, I do not know.' The two angels ask him: 'What is your religion?' He answers: 'Alas, alas, I do not know.' The two angels ask him: 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He answers: 'Alas, alas, I do not know.' Then a caller calls out from the sky: 'He has lied. Spread for him bedding from Hell and open for him a door to Hell,' so that its heat and scorching wind come to him. His grave is made narrow for him until his ribs interlock. Then a man comes to him with an extremely ugly face, ugly clothes and a foul smell, and says: 'Receive news of what will grieve you. This is the day you were promised.' The deceased asks: 'Who are you? You have come with evil.' He answers: 'I am your wicked deeds.' Then the deceased says: 'O my Lord, do not establish the Hour.'" (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
