Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was called to a funeral, he would ask about the deceased. If the person was praised, he would get up and offer the funeral prayer over him; and if evil was spoken of the person, he would say to the family: "See to it yourselves," and he would not offer the funeral prayer over that person.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

The people spoke of its good, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become due." Then another funeral was brought, and the people spoke ill of it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become due." The Companions said: "So-and-so's funeral was brought and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'It has become due'; then so-and-so was brought and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'It has become due.'" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! So-and-so was brought and the people praised him, and you said: 'It has become due.' Then so-and-so was brought and the people spoke ill of him, and you said: 'It has become due.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A brother of yours was brought and you bore whatever testimony you bore about him, so your testimony became due. Then your brother so-and-so was brought and you bore the testimony you bore about him, so your testimony became due. You are the witnesses of Allah on earth, concerning one another."
