Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a funeral was brought. The people said of that person: "If only you had been such-and-such (that would have been fitting)." Then another funeral was brought, and the people said: "If only you had been such-and-such (that would have been fitting)." That is, they praised one funeral and spoke ill of the other. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are the witnesses of Allah on earth, and the angels are the witnesses of Allah in heaven." In one narration the words are: "When you have borne witness, it has become due."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The chain of the first contains a narrator, Abdul-Ghaffar bin al-Qasim Abu Maryam, and he is da'if (weak), while the chain of the second contains a narrator, Musa bin Ubaydah, and he is da'if (weak).
