Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When a Muslim dies and the members of four households from among his nearest neighbours bear witness in his favour, Allah Almighty says: 'I have accepted your knowledge about this person, and I have forgiven him for what you do not know.'"
Imam Ahmad and Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it. He narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Any Muslim who dies and the members of four households from among his nearest neighbours bear witness in his favour that they know nothing of him but good, Allah Almighty says: 'I have accepted your knowledge, and I have forgiven him for what you do not know.'" The narrators of Imam Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A hadith from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is also mentioned in the Sahih, but it is other than this one.
