Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to lead us in prayer, then he went away. When he came back, drops of water were dripping from his head. He led us in prayer, then he said: "Just now I began leading you in prayer while I was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah). Whoever faces a situation like the one I faced, or finds a disturbance in his stomach, should do as I have done."
Ahmad recorded it.

It is reported from him (Sayyiduna Ali) that he said: Once we began praying with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when during it the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went away while we remained standing. The narrator then mentioned the rest of the hadith as before. Ahmad, al-Bazzar, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded both these narrations, except that al-Tabarani narrated these words: "That person should go back, perform ghusl (ritual bath), then come and offer the prayer (anew)." All its routes revolve around the narrator Ibn Lahi'ah, about whom there is criticism.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir for them in the Fajr prayer, then he made a sign to them, then he went away. Then he came back, and drops of water were dripping from his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in prayer, then he said: "I am only a human being like you; I was in a state of major impurity (janabah) and I had forgotten (this)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains more than one narrator whom I did not find anyone mentioning.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began the prayer, and we too said the takbir behind him. Then he made a sign to the people: "Stay as you are." We remained continuously standing until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us; he had performed the ritual bath (ghusl), and drops of water were dripping from his head.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The chapter on one who has performed tayammum leading in prayer one who has performed ablution comes a little after this, if Allah wills.
