بَابٌ فِي الْإِمَامِ يُسِيءُ الصَّلَاةَ .

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُخَالِفُ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ : مَا يَحْمِلُكُ عَلَى هَذَا ؟ فَقَالَ : إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يُصَلِّي صَلَاةً مَتَى تُوَافِقُهَا أُصَلِّي مَعَكَ، وَمَتَى تُخَالِفُهَا أُصَلِّي وَأَنْقَلِبُ إِلَى أَهْلِي .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .

It is reported about Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to act contrary to Umar bin Abd al-Aziz. Umar bin Abd al-Aziz said to him: What makes you do this? He said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), how he used to pray. So when you pray in accordance with (the practice of) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I pray behind you, and when you pray contrary to the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I pray (by myself) and go back to my home.

وَعَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُخَالِفُ مَرْوَانَ بْنَ الْحَكَمِ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ مَرْوَانُ : مَا يَحْمِلُكَ عَلَى هَذَا ؟ قَالَ : إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يُصَلِّي صَلَاةً إِنْ وَافَقْتَهُ وَافَقْتُكَ ، وَإِنْ خَالَفْتَهُ صَلَّيْتُ وَانْقَلَبْتُ إِلَى أَهْلِي .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to act contrary to Marwan bin al-Hakam in his prayer. Marwan asked him: What makes you do this? He said: I have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying. If you pray in accordance with the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I will go along with you, and if you pray contrary to (his way), I will pray (by myself) and go back to my home.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

وَعَنْ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ الْمِصْرِيِّ قَالَ : سَافَرْنَا مَعَ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ فَحَضَرَتْنَا الصَّلَاةُ، فَأَرَدْنَا أَنْ يَتَقَدَّمَنَا قَالَ : إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَقُولُ : " مَنْ أَمَّ قَوْمًا فَإِنْ أَتَمَّ فَلَهُ التَّمَامُ وَلَهُمُ التَّمَامُ ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَتِمَّ فَلَهُمُ التَّمَامُ وَعَلَيْهِ الْإِثْمُ " .

Abu Ali al-Misri narrates: We were travelling with Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) when the time of prayer came. We wanted him to go forward (and lead us). He said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever leads people in prayer, if he performs it completely, he will receive the complete reward and the people will also receive the complete reward; and if he (the imam) does not perform it completely, the people will receive the complete reward and the sin will be upon him (the imam)."
