It is reported about Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he once led people in prayer. When he had finished the prayer, he said: I forgot to seek your permission before going forward. Are you pleased with my prayer (i.e. with my leading you)? The people said: Yes! O disciple (hawari) of the Messenger of Allah! Who would dislike that? Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever leads people in prayer while they dislike him, his prayer does not rise above his ears."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir through Sulayman bin Ayyub al-Talhi, about whom Abu Zur'ah said: Most of the hadiths he narrates are not corroborated. The author of al-Mizan says: He narrates munkar (objectionable) reports; yet he has been declared trustworthy.
