Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and urinated, then he wiped with dust (that is, performed dry ablution). I said: "O Messenger of Allah, the water is close to you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not know; perhaps I may not reach it." On another occasion the narrator Yahya reported these words: "I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he went out, urinated and performed dry ablution, and it was said to him: 'The water is close to you.'"
Ahmad, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, who is da'if (weak).
