Hizam bin Hakim bin Hizam narrates from his father this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "You are in a time in which those with knowledge of the religion are many and the orators are few, those who give are many and those who ask are few; in this time action is better than knowledge. Soon there will come a time in which the people of knowledge will be few and the orators many, those who ask will be many and those who give will be few; at that time knowledge will be better than action."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman al-Tara'ifi, and he is thiqah (trustworthy), though it has been said about him that he narrates from weak narrators; this narration he related from Sadaqah bin Khalid, who is one of the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "You are in a time in which the scholars are many and the orators few. In this time, whoever abandons even the smallest tenth of what he knows will fall into Hell. Soon a time will come upon the people in which the scholars will be few and the orators many; in that time whoever holds on to a tenth of what he knows will be saved."
