Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the polytheists were going around searching for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and coming and going near the cave, he said: "Alas for Suhayb! I do not have Suhayb with me." Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to leave from there (that is, Makkah), he sent Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) two or perhaps three times. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) found him praying. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I found him praying, and I did not like to make him cut his prayer short." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You did right." Then the two of them departed that same night. The next morning, Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) set out and came to Sayyidah Umm Ruman (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). She said: "Are you to be seen here? Your two brothers have already left, and we had put some things for you in their provisions." Sayyiduna Suhayb (may Allah be pleased with him) says: So I set out and came to my wife Umm Amr. I took my sword, my quiver and my bow, until I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah. I found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw me, he got up, came to me and congratulated me on the verse that had been revealed about me. He took hold of my hand. I reproached him, and he apologised. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), declaring me successful, said: "The deal has succeeded."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zabalah, who is matruk (abandoned).
