Sayyidah Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he had the women of the Ansar gathered together in a house. Then he sent Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to those women. He stood at the door and greeted the women with salam, and the women returned his greeting. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am the envoy of the Messenger of Allah to you." The women said: "Welcome to the Messenger of Allah and to the envoy of the Messenger of Allah!" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Bear witness that you will not associate anyone with Allah Almighty, you will not steal, you will not commit fornication, you will not kill your children, you will not bring forth a slander invented by yourselves, and you will not disobey in what is good." The women said: "Very well." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) extended his hand from outside the door, and the women extended their hands from inside. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Allah! Be witness!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered that on the two Eids, menstruating women and the free women (or young girls) should also come out; however, we (that is, the women) were forbidden from following funerals, and the Friday prayer was not made obligatory upon us either. The narrator says: I asked him about the slander, and about this saying: "They will not disobey you in what is good", and he replied: "What is meant by it is wailing over the dead." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded this narration in a greatly abridged form.
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
