Abd al-Malik bin Sal' narrates: I asked Abd Khayr: "How old are you?" He replied: "120 years." I asked: "Do you remember anything of the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah)?" He replied: "Yes! We were in our land in Yemen when a letter from the Messenger of Allah came to us; he (peace and blessings be upon him) invited people to a vast good. My father was among those who went out, and I was a boy in those days. When my father returned, he said to my mother: 'Give instructions concerning this cooking pot, that its food be thrown to the dogs, for we have accepted Islam.'"
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Many narrations relating to history and other matters will come at the end of the chapter on the virtues of the Companions.
