This narration is reported from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him): The narrator Mu'awiyah once narrated it as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), and once did not narrate it as marfu' (but rather as mawquf, the words being): "Indeed, Allah Almighty will not leave this Ummah unable to reach half a day (that is, five hundred years). When you see Syria (al-Sham) become the dining spread of one man and his household, at that time Constantinople will be conquered."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Al-Tabarani recorded this narration. The author of "al-Atraf" attributed it to Abu Dawud and said that it is in the chapter on the great battles (al-Malahim), but I did not find it in that book. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, about whom there is disagreement over whether he can be used as evidence; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
