Sayyiduna al-Jafshish al-Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some people from Kindah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "You belong to our family," and they made this claim. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We do not trace our lineage through our mother, nor do we disown our father; we are among the descendants of al-Nadr bin Kinanah."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir; its chain contains the narrator Isma'il bin Amr al-Bajali, whom Abu Hatim and al-Daraqutni declared weak, while Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy). (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Many reports relating to lineage, deaths, names and kunyahs will come later at the end of the chapter on "the virtues of the Companions".
