Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a horse, which he gave as a gift to a man from the Ansar. He used to hear its neighing; then he found it missing, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the man: "What has become of your horse?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, I have castrated it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the forelocks of horses there is goodness and spoils until the Day of Resurrection. Their forelocks are their source of warmth, and their tails are their fly-whisks."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Rashid bin Yahya al-Mari, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared da'if (weak), while Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy) and said: He makes mistakes and contradicts (other narrators).
