Sayyiduna Yazid bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was about to send me to Syria, he said to me: "O Yazid! You have relatives, and it may be that you will favour them with positions of authority; that is what I fear most for you. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever is placed in charge of any affair of the Muslims and appoints someone over them as a favour (muhabah) (that is, appoints an unqualified person out of partiality), upon him is the curse of Allah Almighty; Allah Almighty will not accept from him any obligatory or voluntary worship until He enters him into Hell. And whoever gives anyone the protected pasture of Allah Almighty, and that person does something unjust regarding the protected pasture of Allah Almighty, upon him is the curse of Allah Almighty' (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) 'the protection of Allah Almighty is withdrawn from him.'"
Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains a man who has not been named.
