عَنْ أَبِي فِرَاسٍ قَالَ : خَطَبَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ النَّاسَ فَقَالَ : أَلَا إِنَّهُ قَدْ أَتَى عَلَيَّ حِينٌ وَأَنَا أَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَنْ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ يُرِيدُ بِهِ اللَّهَ وَمَا عِنْدَهُ ، فَقَدْ خُيِّلَ إِلَيَّ بِأُخَرَةَ : أَنَّ رِجَالًا قَدْ قَرَءُوهُ يُرِيدُونَ بِهِ مَا عِنْدَ النَّاسِ ، أَلَا فَأَرِيدُوا اللَّهَ بِقِرَاءَتِكُمْ وَأَرِيدُوهُ بِأَعْمَالِكُمْ ، أَلَا لَا تَضْرِبُوا الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَتُذِلُّوهُمْ وَلَا تُجْمِرُوهُمْ فَتَفْتِنُوهُمْ وَلَا تُنْزِلُوهُمُ الْغِيَاضَ فَتُضَيِّعُوهُمْ وَلَا تَمْنَعُوهُمْ حُقُوقَهُمْ فَتُكَفِّرُوهُمْ .
قُلْتُ : فِي الصَّحِيحِ طَرَفٌ مِنْهُ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ فِي حَدِيثٍ طَوِيلٍ . وَأَبُو فِرَاسٍ لَمْ أَرَ مَنْ جَرَحَهُ وَلَا وَثَّقَهُ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .

رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ فِي حَدِيثٍ طَوِيلٍ . وَأَبُو فِرَاسٍ لَمْ أَرَ مَنْ جَرَحَهُ وَلَا وَثَّقَهُ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ ثِقَاتٌ .
Abu Firas narrates that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), addressing the people in a sermon, said: Beware! There was a time when I used to think that whoever recites the Qur'an intends by it only Allah Almighty and what is with Him (of reward). Then later it occurred to me that there will also be people who learn the Qur'an and intend by it to obtain what is with people (of worldly benefits). Beware! Intend Allah Almighty (and His pleasure) by your recitation, and intend Him by your deeds. Beware! Do not beat the Muslims and so humiliate them, and do not hold them back in the armies (not letting them go home), for in that way you will put them to trial; and do not station them in the thickets (that is, far from settlements), or you will cause them to perish; and do not withhold their rights, or you will drive them to ingratitude. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of it is reported in the Sahih.
Ahmad mentioned it within a long hadith. I have not seen anyone criticise the narrator Abu Firas or declare him trustworthy; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
