Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon a time will come upon my Ummah in which the reciters of the Qur'an will be many and those with understanding of the religion will be few; (in that time) knowledge will be taken away and "harj" will increase." The people asked: What is meant by "harj"? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Killing among you. Then after that a time will come in which people will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. Then a time will come in which the hypocrite and the polytheist will argue with the believer." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this report is found in the Sahih.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, who is da'if (weak).
