Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 862

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Among the Children of Israel there was a dog that was heavily pregnant. Once guests came to her owners, and she thought: Tonight I will not bark at the guest. Then her puppy howled inside her belly. It was revealed to one man among them that the example of this dog is like that of a nation that will come after you, whose foolish people will gain the upper hand over its scholars.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Ahmad recorded something similar, except that in Ahmad's narration the words are: "Its foolish people will overpower its forbearing people." This narration will come later in the chapter on trials (fitan). Its chain contains Shu'ayb bin Safwan, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) while Yahya declared him da'if (weak); and the narrator Ata bin al-Sa'ib suffered from mental confusion (ikhtilat).
