وَعَنِ أَبِي الْقَمُوصِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَحَدُ الْوَفْدِ الْذِينَ وَفَدُوا مِنْ عَبَدِ الْقَيْسَ قَالَ : وَأَهْدَيْنَا لَهُ فِيمَا يُهْدَى نَوْطًا ، أَوْ قِرْبَةً مِنْ تَعْضُوضٍ أَوْ بَرْنِيٍّ فَقَالَ : " مَا هَذَا ؟ " فَقُلْنَا : هَذِهِ هَدِيَّةٌ . وَأَحْسَبُهُ نَظَرَ إِلَى تَمْرَةٍ مِنْهَا فَأَعَادَهَا مَكَانَهَا وَقَالَ : " أَبْلِغُوهَا آلَ مُحَمَّدٍ " قَالَ : فَسَأَلَهُ الْقَوْمُ عَنِ أَشْيَاءَ حَتَّى سَأَلُوهُ عَنِ الشَّرَابِ، فَقَالَ : " لَا تَشْرَبُوا فِي دُبَّاءٍ ، وَلَا حَنْتَمٍ ، وَلَا نَقِيرٍ ، وَلَا مُزَفَّتَ ، اشْرَبُوا فِي الْحَلَالِ الْمُوكَئِ عَلَيْهِ " . قَالَ لَهُ قَائِلُنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا يُدْرِيكَ مَا الدُّبَّاءُ وَالْحَنْتَمُ وَالنَّقِيرُ وَالْمُزَفَّتُ ؟ قَالَ : " أَنَا لَا أَدْرِي مَاهِيَهْ ! ! أَيُّ هَجَرٍ أَعَزُّ " . قُلْنَا : الْمُشَقَّرُ قَالَ : " فَوَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ دَخَلْتُهَا وَأَخَذْتُ إِقْلِيدَهَا " .
قَالَ : وَكُنْتُ نَسِيتُ مِنْ حَدِيثِهِ شَيْئًا ، فَأَذْكَرَنِيهِ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَرْوَةَ . قَالَ : " وَقَفْتُ عَلَى عَيْنِ الزَّارَةِ " ثُمَّ قَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِعَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ إِذْ أَسْلَمُوا طَائِعِينَ ، غَيْرَ كَارِهِينَ ، غَيْرَ خَزَايَا ، وَلَا مَوْتُورِينَ " ، إِذْ بَعْضُ قَوْمِنَا لَا يُسْلِمُوا حَتَّى يَخْزَوْا وَيُوتَرُوا ، قَالَ : وَابْتَهَلَ وَجْهُهُ هَاهُنَا مِنَ الْقِبْلَةِ - [يَعْنِي : عَنْ يَمِينِ الْقِبْلَةِ] - حَتَّى اسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ . [ثُمَّ يَدْعُو لِعَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ ثُمَّ] قَالَ : " إِنَّ خَيْرَ [ أَهْلِ ] الْمَشْرِقِ عَبْدُ الْقَيْسِ " .
قُلْتُ : رَوَى أَبُو دَاوُدَ مِنْهُ طَرَفًا فِي الْأَوْعِيَةِ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
قَالَ : وَكُنْتُ نَسِيتُ مِنْ حَدِيثِهِ شَيْئًا ، فَأَذْكَرَنِيهِ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَرْوَةَ . قَالَ : " وَقَفْتُ عَلَى عَيْنِ الزَّارَةِ " ثُمَّ قَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِعَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ إِذْ أَسْلَمُوا طَائِعِينَ ، غَيْرَ كَارِهِينَ ، غَيْرَ خَزَايَا ، وَلَا مَوْتُورِينَ " ، إِذْ بَعْضُ قَوْمِنَا لَا يُسْلِمُوا حَتَّى يَخْزَوْا وَيُوتَرُوا ، قَالَ : وَابْتَهَلَ وَجْهُهُ هَاهُنَا مِنَ الْقِبْلَةِ - [يَعْنِي : عَنْ يَمِينِ الْقِبْلَةِ] - حَتَّى اسْتَقْبَلَ الْقِبْلَةَ . [ثُمَّ يَدْعُو لِعَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ ثُمَّ] قَالَ : " إِنَّ خَيْرَ [ أَهْلِ ] الْمَشْرِقِ عَبْدُ الْقَيْسِ " .
قُلْتُ : رَوَى أَبُو دَاوُدَ مِنْهُ طَرَفًا فِي الْأَوْعِيَةِ .

Abu al-Qamus Zayd bin Ali narrates: One of the members of the delegation of the tribe of Abd al-Qays which came (to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) narrated this hadith to me. He said: Among the things we presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a nawt or a qirbah (a particular vessel for keeping dates) of ta'dud (a particular kind of date), or perhaps of barni. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is this?" We said: "This is a gift." The narrator says: I think it also happened that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at one of the dates, then put it back in its place and said: "Convey it to the family of Muhammad!" The narrator says: The people asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about some things, until they asked him about drinks. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not drink from dubba', or hantam, or naqir, or muzaffat; drink from a lawful (vessel) whose mouth has been tied." One of us said: "O Messenger of Allah! How do you know what dubba', hantam, naqir and muzaffat are?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would I not know what it is? Which part of Hajar is the most powerful?" We replied: "Al-Mushaqqar (the name of a place)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! I have entered that place and taken hold of its iqlid (key)." The narrator says: I have forgotten part of this hadith, and then Ubaydullah bin Jarwah reminded me of it. He related: "I stopped at the spring of al-Zarah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication: "O Allah! Forgive the people of the delegation of Abd al-Qays, for they are accepting Islam willingly, not under compulsion, (accepting Islam) without any disgrace and without being forced," whereas some members of our people did not accept Islam until they were disgraced and forced. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face from this side, that is, from the right side of the qiblah, until he faced the qiblah. Then, while supplicating for the people of the tribe of Abd al-Qays, he said: "The best of the people of the East are the people of the tribe of Abd al-Qays." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded a part of this narration, the part concerning vessels.
