Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 7124

In a narration from him, the wording is: He said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), wearing a Tayalisi cloak trimmed with brocade. Then the narrator mentioned the narration as before, except that in it the wording is: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and sat down, and he said: "When the time of death drew near for Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him), he called his two sons and said: 'I am going to give you a brief bequest. I will command you to do two things and I will forbid you two things. I forbid you both from associating partners with Allah (shirk) and from arrogance, and I command you both to say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah), for if all the heavens and the earth and everything between them were placed in one pan of the scale, and La ilaha illallah were placed in the other pan, that pan would outweigh them; and if all the heavens and the earth were a ring and La ilaha illallah were placed upon them, it would break them apart.'" Ahmad recorded all of these narrations. Al-Tabarani recorded something similar, and in one narration he added the words: "I enjoin you to say Subhan Allah (glory be to Allah), for it is the worship of all creation, and I enjoin you to say the takbir."
Al-Bazzar recorded it as a hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and I have mentioned it in the chapter on adhkar (remembrances), in the section on the virtue of La ilaha illallah. The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).
