Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man from the desert came, wearing a cloak of sijan with buttons of silk brocade. He said: "Beware! This companion of yours has brought down every horseman son of a horseman!" The narrator says: He also said: "He wants to bring down every horseman son of a horseman and raise up every shepherd son of a shepherd!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the edges of his cloak and said: "Do I not see on you the clothing of one who has no sense?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the time of death drew near for the Prophet of Allah, Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him), he said to his son: 'I am about to give you my will. I will command you to do two things and forbid you from two things. I command you to say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah), for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed in one pan of the scale and La ilaha illallah were placed in the other pan, the pan of La ilaha illallah would outweigh them; and if the seven heavens and the seven earths were a closed ring, La ilaha illallah and Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him) would break them. This is the prayer of everything, and through it creation is given provision. And I forbid you from associating partners with Allah and from arrogance.'" The narrator says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! As for associating partners, we have understood that; what is meant by arrogance? Does arrogance mean that one of us has good sandals with good straps?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He asked: "Does it mean that one of us has a fine suit of clothes which he wears?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He asked: "Does it mean that someone has a riding animal which he rides?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He asked: "Then does it mean that one of us has companions who sit with him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then what is arrogance?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Belittling the truth and looking down on people."
