Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 7125

Al-Agharr Abu Malik says: When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to appoint Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as his successor, he sent for Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), summoned him and said: I am calling you to a burdensome matter, one that is hard on whoever takes charge of it. So, O Umar, fear Allah Almighty along with obeying Him, and obey Him along with fearing Him, for piety is the thing that is safeguarded. Then, after that, the matter will be presented, and only one who acts upon it becomes deserving of it. Whoever commands what is true but acts upon falsehood, or commands what is good but acts upon what is evil, his hope will soon be cut off and this deed of his will encompass him. So if you become the one in charge of their affairs, then, if you are able, keep your hands dry of their blood (that is, untainted), do not put their wealth into your belly, and restrain your tongue regarding their honour. If you are able, do so. And nothing can be done except with the help of Allah Almighty.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; it is munqati' (its chain is broken), and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
