Abu Hazim narrated about Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him): Once he was in a gathering of his people, narrating hadiths to them on the authority of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Meanwhile, they turned towards one another and began talking among themselves. Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said: "Look at these people! I am narrating hadith to them on the authority of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), what my eyes saw and my ears heard, and they have turned towards one another. By Allah! I will leave from among you and never return to you." The narrator says: I said to him: "Where will you go?" He said: "I will go and take part in jihad in the path of Allah." I said: "How can you take part in jihad, when you can neither sit firmly on a horse, nor strike with a sword, nor thrust with a spear?" He said: "O Abu Hazim! I will go and join the ranks, and then some stray arrow or stone will strike me, and Allah Almighty will grant me martyrdom." The narrator says: He went, and by my life, he did not come back except wounded.
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Hamid bin Sulayman, who is da'if (weak).
